Climate change is creating conditions that are worsening the frequency and severity of flooding

On average, storms are getting more severe as global temperatures rise. Increased precipitation and rising sea levels lead to more flood events.

Double the Trouble

There are 2 different kinds of flooding to look out for in PEI:

  • Coastal flooding from rising sea levels and storm surges.

  • Inland flooding which occurs when extreme rainfall or snow melt can’t be absorbed into the ground fast enough.

    • Pluvial/surface flooding happens when drainage systems get overwhelmed or water can't be absorbed into the ground fast enough.

    • Fluvial/river flooding happens when rain, snowmelt or ice jams cause water levels in rivers, streams or ditch to splill over its banks.

More Than Just Water

Flooding impacts homes and communities, both in the short and longer term.

  • The force of the water itself, as well as the impact of debris carried within the water, can cause massive damage.

  • When possessions or structural aspects of the home are submerged, the exposure to water can damage property and lead to mould.

  • Flooding can also cause waterborne illnesses, disruption in communication or other essential services, and dislocation of families and communities.
